Why Men Need a Different Map

Most men come to therapy for the same reason they finally pull over to look at a map: they’ve been driving for hours, they’re low on gas, and they’ve realized they are well and truly lost.

The problem is that a lot of traditional therapy feels like someone asking you how you feel about being lost while you’re standing in the middle of a storm. Don’t get me wrong—feelings matter. But when you’re in the thick of it, you don't just need a mirror; you need a guide who knows the terrain and a set of tools that actually work.

At Field Guide Counseling, I work exclusively with men because the way we experience the world—and our "stuckness"—is unique. Here is why this work matters and why my approach is built for the way you actually live.

STOP TRYING TO BE "USEFUL" AND START BEING WELL

We are raised to be the fixers, the providers, and the utility players. We measure our worth by what we can do for others. But when ADHD, anxiety, or relationship rifts start to pull at the foundation, that "utility trap" becomes a cage. You feel like if you aren’t fixing something, you’re failing.

Working with men is important because we have to bridge the gap between being a "provider" and being a person. You aren’t a machine that needs a tune-up; you’re a man who needs a life that is actually sustainable and peaceful.

I’M NOT HERE TO JUST WATCH YOU TALK

One of the biggest complaints I hear from guys who have tried therapy before is: "I just sat there and talked, and I didn’t feel like I was going anywhere."

If you’re looking for someone to just nod and say "tell me more," I’m probably not your guy. My background isn't just in counseling; I spent years in the IT and project management world before becoming an LMFT. I think in systems. I look for the "bugs" in the communication or the "broken code" in your daily habits.

My approach is about directness. We’re going to have straightforward conversations. We’re going to get into the roots of why you lose control of your anger or why your relationships feel like a constant uphill climb. But we aren’t going to stay in the past forever. We’re looking for breakthroughs that lead to change.

YOU NEED TOOLS, NOT JUST THEORIES

In my own life, whether I’m out fly fishing or working on a home improvement project, I know that having the right tool for the job is the difference between a successful day and a total disaster. Therapy should be no different.

This is why I am committed to doing more than just listen. I am committed to giving you concrete feedback and tools to help you get back on the path.

OWN THE GEAR, NAVIGATE THE TERRAIN

Whether you’re in Johnson City or connecting with me virtually across Tennessee, the goal is the same: to get you to a place where you don't need a therapist anymore.

You don't need to be "fixed" because you aren't broken—you’re just navigating some rugged emotional terrain without the right map. It’s time to stop wandering and start moving with intent.

If you’re ready to do the hard work of reclamation—for your heart, your home, and your future—let’s get started.
