You may be functioning on the outside, but internally something feels off. Maybe you’re overwhelmed, disconnected, irritable, stuck, distracted, or carrying pressure you don’t know how to put down.
At Field Guide Counseling, therapy is not vague or passive. We work toward clarity, emotional steadiness, healthier patterns, and real change in your day-to-day life.
This might be a good fit if…
You feel stuck but don’t know exactly why
You’re dealing with ADHD, distraction, or lack of follow-through
You’re constantly stressed, anxious, or mentally overloaded
You’re burned out but still pushing yourself forward
You’re struggling in relationships or feeling disconnected
You’ve gone through something difficult and haven’t fully processed it
Therapy here is practical, direct, and human.
A lot of men worry therapy will be awkward, vague, or overly clinical. That’s not the goal here.
At Field Guide Counseling, we focus on what is actually happening in your life: the patterns keeping you stuck, the pressure you’re carrying, the emotions you’ve learned to override, and the decisions you need to make differently.
Together, we work on:
Understanding what is driving your stress, shutdown, anger, anxiety, or disconnection
Building tools that help you regulate your nervous system
Creating healthier patterns at work, at home, and in relationships
Processing unresolved pain instead of continuing to push it down
Moving toward a life that feels more steady, clear, and connected
Welcome! I am genuinely glad you are here.
About Matt Dean – Men’s Therapist in Johnson City, TN
I’m Matt, the therapist behind Field Guide Counseling. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist in Johnson City, Tennessee, and I specialize in helping men work through ADHD, anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, and relationship challenges.
Most people describe me as a normal guy, and that’s intentional. I want therapy to feel approachable, honest, and useful—not stiff, confusing, or disconnected from real life.
My work is practical, grounded, and focused on helping men understand what is happening beneath the surface so they can move toward clarity, steadiness, and real change.
Why I Started Field Guide Counseling
Field Guide Counseling was built from personal experience. Through my own therapy, I discovered that real change is possible—healing, clarity, and a deeper sense of peace are all within reach.
Therapy gave me practical tools for everyday life and helped me address the root causes beneath my struggles. That experience drives my work today. I’m committed to helping other men in Tennessee access the same kind of growth, resilience, and lasting change.

My clients consistently tell me I'm a "normal guy" – and that's exactly the point. That approachability makes it easier to open up and face the challenges bringing you to therapy. It's common for men to face unique struggles: relationship conflict, difficulty managing stress, or feeling overwhelmed by big emotions and behaviors. I help men navigate these challenges, develop emotional maturity, and lead lives that are more connected, purposeful, and fulfilling. If you would like to know more about me - Click Here.
